Maureen’s story

What a delight to chat to Maureen

A childhood between foster carers and care. After school took a nanny type role helping in a doctor’s home with their 4 children. Originally from Altrincham, she has lived in many places in the North West including Burton and around the wirral and settled in Chester.

Eventually left around 18 to move to Burton Manor to work at the college there. Moving from kitchen duties to serving  to helping in the residential areas.

Loved ballroom dancing in her earlier years, dancing with different people at different times.

Eventually moving to work in hospitals including Barrowmore, Chester City, Royal and The Countess. Had a great reputation for always getting 100% for her duties helping feed patients and cleaning the surgery areas!

A lovely chat was had with a person who seemed to value friendships and fun! Not a bad place to start! Apparently the name Maureen means ‘great’. Seems about right.

Hope for future

With a daughter with three grand children perhaps great grandchildren at some point!

S’s story

Super S! Scouse and Irish background. So let’s have a laugh!

A childhood that included martial arts and the jitterbug… so don’t get in her way on the dance floor! Danced at the Ballroom at Blackpool tower! Loves a good coach trip with friends with happy memories of Llandudno and getting up to mischief!

She seems to have a great friendship with her mate ‘M’. A friendship that has endured its challenges but seems stronger for sticking with. Loves a good word search too.

Two words? Brave and funny.

The future

Maybe another trip to Llandudno, with friends obviously.

Creative response

A wordsearch obviously! Includes key words fro S’s story and others who’ve taken part! Pop into The OldChapel Cafe to have a go!

Geoff’s story

Geoff’s story travels from India to Australia as an army child, to teaching, to the stage.

Even though Geoff has some hearing challenges from a childhood illness he hasn’t let it get in the way of teaching, acting, singing and performing live! Entertaining children as ‘Cowboy Joe’ and ‘Captain Jack the Pirate’ and even performing in Liverpool in the 1960’s on the same stage the Beatles were to grace the following week. From guitar playing in the dormitory at school to the Philharmonic and the Edinburgh Fringe.

You’ll probably catch him these days at a local open mic near you!

A life being lived.

Unsung Heroes

Unsung Heroes

What is Unsung Heroes all about?

We’re looking to launch and new project called ‘Unsung Heroes‘. Highlighting the people who worked behind the scenes for the NHS and in the voluntary community and faith sector during the Covid crisis and who continue to do so.

The project will involve listening to their stories and then offer opportunities for people to create a song in response. We’d then love to put on a concert to share the songs for everyone involved to participate! We believe it’s important to recognise and value the unsung heroes in our world!

Funding

We’re seeking funding to continue with the project.

An example of an Unsung Heroes story

We’ve put together one story from Paul, who had to step up to become as the Bidston swabbing site manager and much more!   Read about it below.

Paul’s story

Paul’s story is about finding yourself on the frontline of response to what would become a global pandemic.

It’s about stepping up from behind a desk to building hospitals in car parks, to not being able to hug your own children, to the dread of the invisible poison you’re bringing back to your own home, from having to strip on your own doorstep before entering, to fending off the local vipers trying to prove it's all a joke and an illusion. To seeing death, pain and suffering first hand, to being frozen and fearful and overwhelmed. No respite, little support, constant.

It’s also about how humans can step up in the most challenging circumstances, how a community can rally round and make what’s needed, it’s about the sacrifices people make in caring for others and the positive difference we can make when the rules are thrown out and we have to trust our gut and instinct to do the right thing, working dark to dark, in the valiant pursuit of saving others.

Reflection

Paul hadn't realised how much was still unprocessed. It was good to talk.

PJ’s story

PJ’s story is a story of variety. A variety of places, of reinvention and renewal.

Coventry to Rugby to Ipswich to Portmeirion and Chester. It’s about her roles working and being around children and animals, and supporting and caring for others.

It’s about the challenges of families and the stories that a life writes. It involves creating memories, and about how learning new skills connected with our passions can give us joy and fulfil our inner soulful needs, from scrabble to singing as a community of people.

What better future could there be enjoying simple pleasures with friends and a chance to get involved organising a good project! (as long as it doesn’t involve aeroplanes!)

Wisdom

‘I believe that communication is key to understanding each other and, for me, kindness is the most important thing in life.’
