D’s story

Just keep go, go, going!

D’s story is one of a childhood out on the bike, playing football and getting back home late for tea.

Loved drawing, but art at school felt too restrictive. Encouraged by Nan and Mother to do what he wanted to with drawing, and do more, meant he began to believe in himself!

Continues with his own ideas through A levels with art, designing record sleeves, and ends up as a mature student at Uni in Birmingham. Focussed on ‘What I wanted to achieve not what society wanted me to do’.

Moved south to explore London and lands a job at big magazine after contacting 100 different publishers! The call of the countryside and better working hours eventually calls him to the North West.

A story of resilience and a relentless ability to keep taking the knock backs and keep going! Still marrying words and pictures together to tell stories through design.

Wisdom

Learning doesn’t have to be just exams but also life experience.

People skills and social skills are as important as ABC’s. As long as everyone’s armed with the basics: Spelling, being polite, being empathetic, you’ll be alright!

Insight

Be yourself, be nice, have faith in your own ability, listen to the lessons in your path, learn from your mistakes… and keep going!

Maureen’s story

What a delight to chat to Maureen

A childhood between foster carers and care. After school took a nanny type role helping in a doctor’s home with their 4 children. Originally from Altrincham, she has lived in many places in the North West including Burton and around the wirral and settled in Chester.

Eventually left around 18 to move to Burton Manor to work at the college there. Moving from kitchen duties to serving  to helping in the residential areas.

Loved ballroom dancing in her earlier years, dancing with different people at different times.

Eventually moving to work in hospitals including Barrowmore, Chester City, Royal and The Countess. Had a great reputation for always getting 100% for her duties helping feed patients and cleaning the surgery areas!

A lovely chat was had with a person who seemed to value friendships and fun! Not a bad place to start! Apparently the name Maureen means ‘great’. Seems about right.

Hope for future

With a daughter with three grand children perhaps great grandchildren at some point!

S’s story

Super S! Scouse and Irish background. So let’s have a laugh!

A childhood that included martial arts and the jitterbug… so don’t get in her way on the dance floor! Danced at the Ballroom at Blackpool tower! Loves a good coach trip with friends with happy memories of Llandudno and getting up to mischief!

She seems to have a great friendship with her mate ‘M’. A friendship that has endured its challenges but seems stronger for sticking with. Loves a good word search too.

Two words? Brave and funny.

The future

Maybe another trip to Llandudno, with friends obviously.

Creative response

A wordsearch obviously! Includes key words fro S’s story and others who’ve taken part! Pop into The OldChapel Cafe to have a go!

Geoff’s story

Geoff’s story travels from India to Australia as an army child, to teaching, to the stage.

Even though Geoff has some hearing challenges from a childhood illness he hasn’t let it get in the way of teaching, acting, singing and performing live! Entertaining children as ‘Cowboy Joe’ and ‘Captain Jack the Pirate’ and even performing in Liverpool in the 1960’s on the same stage the Beatles were to grace the following week. From guitar playing in the dormitory at school to the Philharmonic and the Edinburgh Fringe.

You’ll probably catch him these days at a local open mic near you!

A life being lived.
